Removing Stickers From Anything

Woman using a laptop that's covered in stickers

August 2024

We’ve all been there: you buy a new item, get back to your apartment or townhome, and easily remove any packaging… except for that pesky sticker that refuses to come off cleanly. Whether it’s price tags on gifts, labels on kitchenware, or decals on your laptop, stickers can be stubborn and annoying. But don’t worry! Here are five tried-and-true methods to remove stickers from just about anything without leaving a sticky residue behind.

Warm Soapy Water

This is a classic method that works well on most surfaces, especially for items that can get wet, like glass, plastic, and ceramics.

How to do it:

  1. Fill a sink or a basin with warm, soapy water.
  2. Submerge the item (if possible) and let it soak for about 10-15 minutes. The warm water helps to soften the adhesive.
  3. After soaking, use your fingers or a plastic scraper to peel the sticker off. If there are any remaining bits, a sponge or cloth can help scrub them away.
  4. Rinse the item thoroughly and dry it with a towel.

For non-submersible items, soak a cloth in the warm soapy water and lay it over the sticker for a few minutes before attempting to peel it off.

Hairdryer Heat

Heat is a great way to tackle stickers, especially on surfaces like metal, glass, and plastic. It helps to soften the adhesive, making it easier to peel off.

How to do it:

  1. Set your hairdryer to a medium or high heat setting.
  2. Hold the hairdryer a few inches away from the sticker and apply heat for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Once the sticker feels warm to the touch, use your fingernail or a plastic scraper to gently peel it off.
  4. If there’s any residue left, wipe it away with a cloth and some soapy water or rubbing alcohol.

Be cautious with heat-sensitive items. If the item feels like it might warp or melt, switch to a lower heat setting or try another method.

Rubbing Alcohol or Vinegar

These household staples are excellent for dissolving adhesive residue and work well on most surfaces, including wood, metal, and plastic.

How to do it:

  1. Apply rubbing alcohol or white vinegar to a cotton ball or cloth.
  2. Rub the cotton ball or cloth over the sticker until it’s thoroughly soaked.
  3. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the alcohol or vinegar to break down the adhesive.
  4. Use your fingernail or a plastic scraper to peel off the sticker.
  5. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth.

Test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure the alcohol or vinegar doesn’t damage the surface.

Peanut Butter or Cooking Oil

This method might sound a bit unusual, but the oils in peanut butter or cooking oil can effectively break down adhesive, making it easy to remove stickers from various surfaces.

How to do it:

  1. Apply a small amount of peanut butter or cooking oil (like olive or vegetable oil) to the sticker.
  2. Spread it evenly and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Use a cloth or paper towel to rub the area in a circular motion, helping to lift the sticker and any residue.
  4. Wipe away any remaining oil with a soapy cloth and rinse the item if necessary.

This method works particularly well on glass, plastic, and metal surfaces.

Commercial Adhesive Removers

Sometimes, you need to bring out the big guns. Commercial adhesive removers like Goo Gone or WD-40 are specifically designed to tackle tough stickers and adhesive residue.

How to do it:

  1. Apply the adhesive remover to the sticker according to the product instructions.
  2. Let it sit for the recommended amount of time (usually a few minutes).
  3. Use a cloth or plastic scraper to peel off the sticker.
  4. Clean the area with soapy water to remove any remaining residue from the adhesive remover.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test a small area first to ensure it won’t damage the surface.
