We all know the importance of regularly washing our clothes. However, there are some items in our daily lives that often get overlooked when it comes to the laundry. But they can harbor germs and odors just like anything else. So, the next time your laundry day rolls around, consider adding some of these to the mix.

Backpacks

When was the last time you washed your backpack? It’s exposed to a lot of dirt and germs, especially if placed on floors. To keep yours clean, check the care instructions and give it a good wash.

Bathmats

Bathmats are constantly exposed to moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew growth. To prevent these unwanted guests, wash yours regularly.

Pillows

While we often remember to wash our pillowcases, the pillows themselves can get dirty over time. Sweat, dead skin cells, and dust mites can accumulate inside pillows, affecting their freshness and your sleep quality. Check the care instructions on your pillows and wash or fluff them as recommended.

Pet Bedding

Our furry friends deserve clean bedding too! Your pet’s bed can harbor odors, allergens, and pet dander, which can lead to health issues for both you and your pet. Regularly wash and replace your pet’s bedding to keep them comfortable and your home clean.

Baseball Caps and Hats

Baseball caps and other hats can accumulate sweat and oil from your hair and face, leading to unpleasant odors and stains. Many caps are and knit hats are machine-washable, so check the care label and toss them in the washing machine as needed to keep them looking fresh.

Mattress Pads

Mattress pads are a crucial part of keeping your mattress clean and extending its lifespan. They act as a barrier between your body and the mattress, but over time, they can accumulate sweat, spills, and dust mites. Most mattress pads are machine-washable, so make sure to wash them regularly to maintain a clean and hygienic sleeping environment.

Bed Skirts

Bed skirts often go unnoticed when it comes to laundering, but they play an essential role in completing the look of your bed. In the same way that dust and pet hair can accumulate under your bed, they also end up on your bed skirt. Depending on the fabric, bed skirts can usually be machine-washed. Be sure to check the care label for specific instructions.

Reusable Grocery Bags

We all want to be environmentally conscious by using reusable grocery bags, but how often do we wash them? These bags come into contact with raw food, spills, and other contaminants. While you could hand wash them, do so can be cumbersome. Most fabric bags are machine washable, so turn them inside out and toss them in the laundry.

Potholders and Oven Mitts

Potholders and oven mitts are essential kitchen tools for handling hot pots and pans, but they can quickly become dirty and greasy. Washing them regularly helps prevent cross-contamination as you cook.

Curtains

Curtains add style and privacy to your apartment or townhome, but they also collect dust, pet hair, and odors over time. Depending on the material, curtains can usually be machine-washed. Be sure to read the care label and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to keep your curtains looking fresh and vibrant.
